History Alive! began as a collaborative project with
the Helen Bader Foundation and Milwaukee Public Schools. With additional
support from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, Julia Pferdehirt
created classroom “resource boxes” on the subject of Wisconsin’s
underground railroad history and developed this website for teachers
and students.
Writer and storyteller Julia Pferdehirt is the author of Freedom Train
North: Stories of the Underground Railroad in Wisconsin (Living History
Press) and They Came to Wisconsin (Wisconsin Historical Society). She
visits schools and libraries across the state presenting true stories
of people, places, and events on Wisconsin’s “branch line”
of the underground railroad. She also shares first-person tales of Wisconsin
immigrants and conducts writing workshops for students at all levels.
Ms. Pferdehirt was joined by Alexandre Blardone, webmaster and Erin
Baugus, graphic designer, in creating this resource-rich website.
