Ten Trails to the Past

People’s words are like trails into the past. We follow those trails to the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of those people.

Follow these ten trails to read the words of Harriet Tubman as she crossed the Pennsylvania border to freedom. Share the memories of elders talking about their childhood in slavery. Discover the feelings and thoughts of people who risked everything for freedom.

Each of these ten “trails” will lead you to one quote, one selection from the real story of a person who escaped from slavery or who helped others escape. Each “trail” also includes a question to think and talk about. These questions lead down a trail of their own. You’ll understand more than what happened to our nation and people because of slavery, you’ll begin to think about why.

Trail 1: Thinking About Freedom: Harriet Tubman, Dr. Dyer in WI

Trail 2: Freedom is there, Come with me! Slave stories

Trail 3: Jump Ship to Freedom: A Wisconsin Story

Trail 4: 3 Stories: Africa, Wisconsin, and the Civil War

Trail 5: Frederick Douglass and William Hall: Stealing their Freedom

Trail 6: Looking Back at Slavery: Years later

Trail 7: Thomas Garrett and Sam McAllum

Trail 8: Racine, Wisconsin and Knoxville, Tennessee
