 FREEDOM TRAIN


Stories of the Underground Railroad in Wisconsin
Programs for Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12


In period costume, Julia Pferdehirt tells true, first-person stories of Wisconsin’s underground railroad history drawn from primary sources.

Meet Caroline Quarlls, a 16 year-old girl who escaped bounty hunters by hiding in a barrel in a Milwaukee neighborhood. Hear how George Sublett lost and found his family and how the Great Lakes became a route to freedom.

On film, visit the Milton House, Wisconsin’s national underground railroad historical landmark. Ms. Pferdehirt’s books Freedom Train North and Caroline Quarlls and the Underground Railroad are valuable resource. Explore her website, www.teachingwithstories.com to create lessons and units.

Stories of Wisconsin's Immigrant Heritage
Programs for Grades 3-5, 6-8


Follow immigrants and newcomers from their homes across an ocean or a continent to Wisconsin. In this interactive program, Julia Pferdehirt will share true, first-person stories of Wisconsin’s immigrant history. Why did they come? How did they create new lives and make Wisconsin home?

Discover how our state has been shaped by the contributions, cultures, and traditions of immigrant peoples.

Students will experience film footage of Ellis Island and share their own family stories.

Schools using Wisconsin Historical Society Press book They Came to Wisconsin by Julia Pferdehirt, will find this program a good fit.  Resources for units and interactive projects available.

 


 JACK TALES


True and Tall Tales of Lumberjacks and Logging
Programs for Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8


Did you know a River Rat could throw a bar of soap into the Wisconsin River and ride the bubbles to the other side? Ever had sinkers, stove lids, or axle grease? Know what it takes for a lumberjack to earn the right to shout Tim…ber?

Julia Pferdehirt, author of Wisconsin Forest Tales has created an entertaining program combining true tales of the lumbering era in Wisconsin with tall tales actually told by Wisconsin lumberjacks on cold nights in logging camp bunkhouses.

Jack Tales will take your students into the Pinery and first-person stories of Wisconsin lumberjacks.  And, meet Henri Le Bleu, Three-finger Ole, and a River Rat who outsmarted one Prairie du Sac swindler.
